Barbara Bausch studied German Language and Literature and History at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and the Freie Universität Berlin. As an academic lecturer assigned by the Robert Bosch Foundation, she taught at the University of Sumy in Ukraine and managed (international) cultural projects in 2013–2014. Until 2017 she worked as a programme coordinator for the Robert Bosch Foundation and as an editor for fiction and non-fiction. From 2018–2022 she did her Ph.D at the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School for Literary Studies (Freie Universität Berlin), spending one term at the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Chicago in 2019. After postdoc positions at the Institute for German and Dutch Philology at FU Berlin (2022–2024) and as a Junior Fellow at the DFG-Centre for Advanced Studies Imaginaria of Force at the University Hamburg in 2023 she is now pursuing a professional-track postdoc project on reading as an aesthetic practice at EXC 2020 Temporal Communities.

PhD Project (2018–2022)

Spielformen der Störung. Ror Wolfs radikaler Realismus im Kontext experimenteller Prosa der 1950er-1980er Jahre (Bielefeld 2024, open access)

In reviews, the literary work of Ror Wolf has often been described as a play on words because of its experimental procedures, while the author called himself, albeit tongue-in-cheek, a 'radical realist'. His prose writing leaves traditional narrative procedures and realistic technique far behind and pursues a wide range of disruptive strategies. Wolf’s long prose works model their access to reality, as the study argues, precisely through practices of disruption, which include e.g. the disruption of the fluid progress of the prose, the referential function of language or the idea of the text as a 'whole'. Wolf's approach to reality ranges from forms of disclosing the reality of the literary text itself, to reflecting on the possibilities of (realistic) representation and the relation of the modern subject to reality, to critical references to social reality. By means of comparative references to prose works and poetological reflections of contemporary authors it becomes clear that Ror Wolf, who throughout his life occupied a marginal position in the literary field, finds himself at the intersection of the most diverse literary movements of his time. Wolf's poetics of disruption, which is experimental and politically engaged at the same time, feeds on literary tendencies of the 1950s and early 1960s, breathes the provocative spirit of '1968', and anticipates developments that will only come to full bloom in the further course of literary history.
