How hybrid is the future of theatre? In what ways has the pandemic changed how we work in theatre and gather in it as a public space?

We would like to invite you to our Exhibition Opening & Symposium Viral Theatres: Pandemic Past /Hybrid Futures as we explore these questions. In three days of events we will take stock of how pandemic time has moved from state of exception to new normality between viral outbreak and containment and what that means for theatrical production.

In our exhibition, our artistic research project Viral Theatres offers a look into the Living Archive we have been gathering to document new forms and contents of pandemic theatre making and audience experience via interviews, rehearsal shadowing, video documentation and digital interactions.

The symposium consists of workshops, roundtable discussions and a VR performance; in it, we bring together international theatre practitioners and scholars to discuss aesthetics, infrastructures, and hybrid as well as digital artistic practices. Among the participants are Anna Krauß (HAU Hebbel-am-Ufer), Rainer Simon (Komische Oper Berlin), Sarah Ellis (Royal Shakespeare Company), Magda Romanska (metaLab@Harvard), Christian Rakow (nachtkritik.de), Fintan Walsh (Birkbeck) and the two performance collectives Turbo Pascal und punktlive. In addition, the independent performance group Interrobang will be showing Deep Godot, a one-to-one performance with an AI that explores the ambivalences of artificial intelligence. The performance collective Fevered Sleep will present their project This Grief Thing.

Wie hybrid ist die Zukunft des Theaters? Und wie hat die Pandemie Theaterarbeit und Theater als öffentlichen Raum nachhaltig verändert?

Wir laden Sie herzlich ein, diese Fragen mit uns in unserer Ausstellung & Symposium  Viral Theatres: Pandemic Past /Hybrid Futures zu erkunden. In unserer dreitägigen Veranstaltung verfolgen wir, wie die Zeit der Pandemie sich von absoluter Ausnahmesituation zu einer neuen Realität aus Infektionsausbruch und -eindämmung entwickelt hat und was das für Theater & Performance bedeutet.

Mit der Ausstellung von Viral Theatres: Pandemic Past /Hybrid Futures macht unser künstlerisches Forschungsprojekt Viral Theatres sein Living Archive zugänglich - eine vielgestaltige Sammlung, welche die neuen Formen und Themen pandemischen Theatermachens und -erlebens in Interviews, Probenbegleitungen, Videodokumenten und digitalen Interaktionen dokumentiert.

Zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung laden wir zu einem Symposium mit Workshops, einer VR Performance und Diskussionsrunden mit internationalen Kulturschaffenden und Wissenschaftler*innen ein. Mit dabei sind u.a. Anna Krauß (HAU Hebbel-am-Ufer), Rainer Simon (Komische Oper Berlin), Sarah Ellis (Royal Shakespeare Company), Magda Romanska (metaLab@Harvard), Christian Rakow (nachtkritik.de), Ulf Otto (LMU) und die Performance Kollektive Turbo Pascal und punktlive. Außerdem gibt die freie Performance Gruppe Interrobang ein Gastspiel mit Deep Godot, einer one-to-one Performance mit einer KI, die die Ambivalenzen Künstlicher Intelligenz für das Publikum erfahrbar macht. Des Weiteren wird das britische Performance Kollektiv Fevered Sleep sein Projekt This Grief Thing vorstellen.
