ilb 2022 | Echo Echo. Post-Soviet Cosmopolis: Anfang des Krieges. Tagebücher aus Kiew
With Yevgenia Belorusets
The photographer and writer Yevgenia Belorusets witnessed the Russian attack on Ukraine from its beginning until she left for Germany in early April 2022. During the day she roamed the streets of Kyiv, documenting people’s daily lives in diary entries and photographs – deliberately refusing to use polarizing war language. "When I started this diary, I was convinced that I would only keep it for a few days. Experts suggest that the war may go on for years. Every day of this war is one too many." [SPIEGEL] She recorded her observations, notes and stills in the German language – enabling a distance that the situation itself barely allowed.
The texts and photographs documenting daily life under the extreme circumstances of war have now been published by Matthes & Seitz Berlin. Yevgenia Belorusets will read from this recent publication, framed by a conversation with the literary critic and editorial journalist Natascha Freundel.
